The security challenges presented by today’s interconnected world require policymakers to go beyond traditional “nation-centric” analyses. The rise of transnational terrorism, the increasing ease of global communication and travel, and the ability of governments to use technological means to monitor private activities, all make it clear that we need to apply new thinking to the area of security. Senator Hart presented an overview of these security issues, and then led a group discussion on what it means to be safe in the 21st century, and what actions governments and private citizens should take to keep the world safe and secure.
